In October 2007, West Lindsey District Council (WLDC), in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council (LCC) and Lincolnshire Enterprise, commissioned the “Gainsborough Regained” Masterplan which, following extensive public consultation, was officially launched by the Council in October 2007.
West Lindsey District Council submitted its initial ‘Expression of Interest’ in response to the Government’s second round of Growth Point bids in October 2007. In 2008, Gainsborough was awarded provisional Growth Point status and the programme of delivery for that growth is based on the creation of three new neighbourhoods for the town.
All three neighbourhoods are on land owned by the Thonock & Somerby Estates and their planning team are now looking to convert the broad concepts outlined in the Masterplan into detailed, deliverable proposals. The Southern Neighbourhood application is the first step in this process and is within the scope of the current Regional Plan which was published on 12 March 2009.
An outline planning application has now been submitted to West Lindsey District Council. A decision on the application is expected to be made by planning committee in summer 2010.
Thonock and
Somerby Estates
Gainsborough Old Hall and the Thonock Estate land was purchased by a London merchant, William Hickman, in the 1590s. In the 1820s, the property passed to a cousin, Henry Bacon, on the condition that his name was changed to Hickman. Later, Sir Henry Hickman Bacon married Elizabeth Beckett, the daughter of the owner of Somerby Park (the neighbouring estate), and in 1915 the combined Thonock and Somerby Estates came to Sir Hickman Bacon where they remain in the same family ownership to this day.
